Greenwich Maribor Cut & Cover Tunnel Renovation

New equipment for safer traffic in Cut & Cover tunnel Greenwich in Maribor, Slovenia.

A new traffic equipment and traffic control system was commissioned for Maribor cut & cover tunnel. The double tube, two lane tunnel lies in the city centre on H2 motorway.

ASIST provided optical communication equipment and complete Tunnel Control and Supervision System, including tunnel controller hardware and software, SCADA system, server and workstation.

All equipment is connected to SCADA system to allow operators full control over tunnel:

- fire alarm control unit (with data from all sensors),

- traffic lights,

- traffic detectors (with wrong way and stopped vehicle detection),

- variable message signs (speed limits, lane closure signs, overtaking signs, radar speed measurement displays),

- UPS power supply.

Tunnel controllers also regulate lighting in tunnel, depending on outside illumination measured by photometers. System and communication equipment is monitored using SNMP protocol.

A semantic approach, scenario based SCADA graphical interface is used for tunnel control. It is easy to use and provides very fast response to events on the road.

A number of automatic algorithms for improved traffic safety were implemented, including automatic tunnel closure in case of wrong way vehicle or fire alarm, and warning in case of stopped vehicle, main voltage blackout, lighting failure or magnetic door opening.

The system was developed and pre-tested in Asist testing facility. It was installed, field-checked and put into operation in only four days for minimal traffic disruption.
